Provoked Violence, Unchecked for Hours The New York Times used videos filmed by journalists, witnesses and protesters to analyze hours of clashes — and a delayed police response — at a pro-Palestinian encampment on Tuesday. On Tuesday night, violence erupted at an encampment that pro-Palestinian protesters had set up on April 25. The videos showed counterprotesters attacking students in the pro-Palestinian encampment for several hours, including beating them with sticks, using chemical sprays and launching fireworks as weapons. The melee began when a group of counterprotesters started tearing away metal barriers that had been in place to cordon off pro-Palestinian protesters. 12:26 a.m.Sean Beckner-Carmitchel via ReutersAt times, counterprotesters swarmed individuals — sometimes a group descended on a single person.

CNN —Dramatic campus protests are injecting an inflammatory new element into an election year that is already threatening to stretch national unity to a breaking point. Republicans smell an openingGOP Rep. Elise Stefanik is a driver of the deepening political backlash against campus protests. Republicans are also using the drama of student protests as a shield and to downplay their presumptive nominee’s own extremism. The unrest is so far not comparable since there’s no student mob trying to destroy American democracy. And they are not yet in the same league as the civil rights and Vietnam War protests in the 1960s and 1970s.

AdvertisementA gag with loopholesIt barred Trump from making statements about witnesses, jurors, case prosecutors, and court staff. A day after the gag, on March 27, Trump amped up his Truth Social attacks on Merchan's daughter, this time mentioning her by name. Trump and Manhattan prosecutors are arguing over the scope of this week's hush-money gag order. AdvertisementLawyers for Donald Trump made an extraordinary request in his hush-money case on Friday: they want state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan to affirm that Tuesday's gag order lets Trump continue verbally attacking the judge's progressive daughter. Their motion, if allowed, would ask the judge to "direct that defendant immediately desist from attacks on family members." The next step in this battle over Trump's hush-money gag order is now in Merchan's court, so to speak. Alternately, he could expand or clarify the gag order to protect family members, and deny further motions on the topic.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) — Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jane Fonda joined California Gov. Gavin Newsom and environmental advocates in Los Angeles on Friday to launch a campaign to keep a 2022 law banning new oil and gas wells near homes, schools and hospitals. It hasn't taken effect after the oil industry qualified a referendum to ask voters to overturn it in November. She has since worked to fight against the health impacts of the oil industry and wants voters to keep the law limiting the location of new oil and gas wells. “The oil industry has no place in our backyards, in our democracy or in our future,” she said.

The situation was so dire last year at one Walgreens store in San Francisco, employees resorted to padlocking frozen foods. The effort to undo some aspects of Prop 47 comes amid a broader check on some other liberal crime enforcement policies in America. Police data shows that larceny theft, which includes retail theft and car break-ins, is down 37% from this time last year. On Tuesday, San Francisco voters approved two ballot measures spearheaded by Breed. Last September, the state announced it would be sending $267 million to law enforcement agencies throughout the state to tackle organized retail theft.

Under the disclosure, public companies will have to release their greenhouse gas emissions, environmental risk impacts, and risk management strategies. Climate disclosure will create a standardized way for companies to report environmental impactPreviously, companies only disclosed their climate impact information on a voluntary basis. Bryan McGannon, managing director of the nonprofit sustainable investment forum US SIF, said the climate disclosure is "a really good first step" toward increasing transparency. The SEC might also be facing litigation from corporate America, which hopes to challenge the new climate disclosure in court, McGannon said. Some companies might be concerned about the potentially high costs of gathering data and complying with the disclosure, SEC officials said.

Gavin Newsom said he's raising pay at his Panera Bread locations after it was widely reported that they'd be exempt from a new state law boosting the minimum wage. Greg Flynn, the franchise owner of 24 Panera Breads in the state, announced on Tuesday that he would raise the minimum wage at his locations from $16 to $20. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Newsom and Flynn have known each other for years, and Flynn has been a longtime donor to Newsom's campaign, Business Insider previously reported. That connection brought Newsom under fire last week because the state's new law appeared to have a potential, specific exception for Panera Bread.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is the closest thing in modern political history to an incumbent who doesn’t hold the office. But these considerable advantages also raise questions about his general election chances given his inability to completely win over Republican primary voters. Despite effectively clinching the Republican nomination with a near-sweep of Super Tuesday states, Trump couldn’t escape the shadow cast by former South Carolina Gov. Haley dropped out Wednesday after consistently winning 30% or so of the GOP primary vote in the states she competed in. Undoubtedly some of the Republican voters who backed Haley in the primaries and caucuses will return to the Trump fold in November, maybe even a majority.

Los Angeles CNN —A Panera Bread franchise owner in California said he will raise the minimum wage for his employees after accusations he benefited from ties to the state’s governor to avoid hiking pay. A new state minimum wage law exempts certain businesses that make and sell bread – a carveout that critics contended benefited Greg Flynn, a billionaire Panera franchise owner who attended high school with Democratic California Gov. On Tuesday, Flynn told CNN that he has decided to raise the minimum pre-tip wage at all of his Panera Bread locations to $20 per hour, regardless of whether his fast-casual bakeries are exempt from the new minimum wage law or not. “At Flynn Group, we are in the people business and believe our people are our most valuable assets,” Flynn said. However, Flynn said he never personally met with Newsom about the minimum wage bill, though he did meet with Newsom’s staff and a group of other restaurant owners to discuss it.

He owns 12 Panera locations in California. When asked last year about the bread exemption that baffled many, Newsom said, "That's part of the sausage-making," declining to elaborate further. Flynn, in a conversation with Bloomberg, denied having a hand in the bread exemption. Nevertheless, on Thursday, Republican lawmakers in California called on the state’s attorney general to investigate the minimum wage exemption. Flynn’s company operates more than just Panera Bread locations. Stack also said that Newsom’s legal team determined that the carve-out would likely not apply to most Panera Bread locations.
